Musurgia Ensemble, founded in 2020 by João Francisco Távora and Helder Sousa, is an ensemble with a variable line-up dedicated to the performance of instrumental music from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. One of its main aims is to recover Portuguese musical heritage, developing projects that intertwine artistic performance and musicological research. This is the context for the project ‘Solfa tangida, Solfa cantada’, developed between 2023 and 2024 in partnership with the Mundos e Fundos project (Centre for Classical and Humanistic Studies of the University of Coimbra) and the vocal group Quarto Tom Ensemble.

In addition to performing instrumental music, the Musurgia Ensemble has developed and is currently developing several projects in the field of staged music, notably the co-production of the opera Daphnis et Eglé by J.-Ph. Rameau (Ponte de Lima, 2023), with its next project in this field being the production of Francisco Manuel de Melo’s Auto do Fidalgo Aprendiz (1665), in partnership with the Companhia NAVIO.

Musurgia Ensemble participated in festivals, including the Festival “Além Mar” (2024), the FÓS – Santarém Organ Festival (2024) and the CásterAntiqua – Ovar Early Music Festival (2025).

In 2025, the Musurgia Ensemble carried out the recording project ‘Iste confessor Domini’, with Portuguese and Franco-Flemish music for flute consort, and is preparing to record ‘Ad Vesperas’, with music from Portuguese musical sources for the Vespers of Corpus Christi.
